Project Upright - NL Falls Prevention

Purpose

To prevent falls among seniors, veterans and their caregivers in Newfoundland & Labrador.

Goals of Project Upright

  1. Raise awareness of Falls and Falls Prevention

  2. Increase the ability of senior and veteran organizations to help prevent falls

  3. Ensure seniors and veterans have information and ideas on ways to prevent falls
     

How Common are Falls?

  • 30% of seniors fall in their homes each year

  • 40% of nursing home admissions are related to falls

  • 50% of people 80+ fall each year

  • Most falls take place indoors

  • 45% of all accidents among seniors take place in the home or surrounding area


Tips to Prevent Falls

  • Be physically active

  • Eat regular, well balanced meals

  • Install aids around your home such as grab bars, railings and non-slip surfaces

  • Keep your pathways and steps free of ice, snow, etc.

  • Don't rush

  • Always remove your reading glasses when walking

  • Monitor your medications

  • Wear protective footwear


How does Project Upright Work?

Health Canada and Veterans Affairs Canada have established a community-based health promotion initiative to help identify ways to prevent falls for veterans and seniors.

In Newfoundland and Labrador the Seniors Resource Centre is sponsoring this project. Partnerships with various seniors clubs and organizations are being formed throughout the province to prevent falls.
