Seniors' Grocery Bus - Door to door service to Bidgood's three times a week. (Sponsored by Bidgood's Supermarket, Transportation by Cook's Bus & Charter)

How the Grocery Bus Program Works:

STEP 1

Contact the Seniors Resource Centre at 737-2333. The coordinator will discuss the program with you.

STEP 2

If you are interested in shopping at Bidgood's Supermarket, the coordinator will take your name, address and telephone number; and arrange the say and time for you to be picked up each week.

STEP 3

Every Monday the coordinator, or a volunteer at the Seniors Resource Centre will call you to see if you want to go shopping that week.

STEP 4

The Grocery Bus will come to your door at the prearranged time and drive you to Bidgood's Supermarket.

STEP 5

When your shopping is completed, your groceries will be individually boxed, tagged and placed on the bus.

STEP 6

You can enjoy a complimentary cup of tea or coffee at Bidgood's Cafe.

STEP 7

Your groceries will be carried into your kitchen when we return to your home.

How Can the Program Help You?

  • Through Providing a cost efficient means of transportation fro grocery shopping. It is also an alternative for seniors who dislike winter driving.

  • Through the promotion of greater self-sufficiency, independence and responsibility.

  • Through providing an opportunity to socialize with other seniors in the community.

Volunteers

  • Are interviewed by the Program Coordinator.

  • Are there to assist seniors with their shopping, if desired.

  • Receive training and support from the Seniors Resource Centre.

Grocery Bus Program Schedule:

Tuesdays: 12:00pm - 4:30pm
Wednesdays: 8:30am - 12:30pm & 12:30pm - 4:30pm

COST: $11.00/round trip or $50.00 for a 5 round-trip pass

  • The Grocery Bus presently services St. John's and Mount Pearl.

  • We Pick up from apartment buildings and private homes.

  • The bus can accommodate a maximum of 16 people per trip and is senior-friendly.


 

Friendly Visiting Program - This wonderful program matches seniors who have limited social contact, with a volunteer who visits once a week.

How the Friendly Visiting Program Works

Seniors

STEP 1

If you are a senior or know of a senior who may enjoy a friendly visitor please contact the Seniors Resource Centre.

STEP 2

The program coordinator will visit you, the senior, in your own home to discuss your likes and dislikes. .

STEP 3

The program coordinator will select a volunteer for you and come along with them for the first visit.

STEP 4

If you feel you would like this volunteer to continue visiting you, confirm this with the program coordinator. The coordinator will then call you regularly.

STEP 5

If you have any concerns please feel free to contact the coordinator at any time.

Volunteers

STEP 1

Contact the Seniors Resource Centre and express your interest in becoming a Friendly Visitor.

STEP 2

The coordinator will arrange a personal interview with you.

STEP 3

The coordinator will accompany you on your first visit.

STEP 4

If you decide to continue to visit the senior, we request that you visit once a week for 1 - 2 hours. The coordinator will call you regularly.

What the Friendly Visiting Program Can Offer You:

  • A link to other programs and services of the Seniors Resource Centre and within the community.

Please note that volunteers...

  • Are interviewed and screened personally by the volunteer coordinator.


SnowBusters Program - offered from December to April ( Pending funding). A path from the door to the street is shoveled.

Foot Care Clinics - Offered by the Victorian Order of Nurses once per month at our office.

Income Tax Clinics - Generally offered in March of each year is offered free of charge by Accountants from the Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Volunteer Driving - Volunteers provide transportation to seniors in need. Volunteers are desperately needed for this service. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer driver, please  contact the Seniors Resource Centre.
