Creating a Community Response to Elder Abuse"Creating a Community Response to Elder Abuse" is a project coordinated by the Seniors Resource Centre of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Elder Abuse Committee of Newfoundland and Labrador (EACNL). Its goal is:
This project has involved working with stakeholders in the province to develop a system or structure for how the government and the community could respond to the needs of seniors who are being abused. This system would potentially involve the cooperation of agencies/organizations such as the RCMP, the RNC, the Health Authorities, the VPI, and the Division of Aging & Seniors (Dept. of Health and Community Services). The implementation of such a response "model" would help ensure that agencies and organizations work together to provide an efficient, appropriate response to reports of elder abuse in all areas (both rural and urban) of our province. The response system that is developed will be presented to the Provincial government, as well as the Innu Health Commissions and the Nunatsiavut government in June 2008. At that time it will be up to the appropriate government agencies to determine if and how the model should be implemented. However, it is hoped that by having had government officials, stakeholders, seniors, and other community groups involved with our project from the earliest stages, our response system will find support. Funding for the project comes from the Community Mobilization Program, National Crime Prevention Strategy, Government of Canada. Additional funding for community consultations in Labrador has been provided by the Public Health Agency of Canada. In addition, the Labrador Metis Nation, Violence Prevention Labrador, and the Nunatsiavut Department of Health have been vital partners in our work in Labrador in connection with this project. Why this response system is needed
