Take Some Advice From the Experts… Caregivers Themselves!

Family caregivers questioned by Caregivers Out of Isolation had the following advice for new caregivers:

1. Use Services
"Don't try to do everything yourself. Avail of whatever help and services you can."
"Find out all the services that are available and get all the help you can."

2. Take Care of Yourself
"It’s going to be a difficult road so don't neglect yourself or you will burn out too quickly."
"Maintain a sense of humor."
"Take a break whether you need it or not."

3. Be Patient
"You must have lots of patience. You have to love and care about the person you are helping."

4. Prepare
"Prepare yourself for all the sacrifice and commitment needed"
"If there's more than one family member, they should all get together and decide on a plan before one person has it all on herself/himself. Sit down as a family and share."

5. Do the Best You Can!
"Try to do the best you can, but don't forget yourself!"
